Revitalizing a Forgotten Campus Space into a Vibrant Student Lounge

When Seminole State College set out to bring students back together after the isolation of the pandemic, leadership recognized an opportunity hidden in plain sight—a large, underused room on campus that had once included a small stage but had long since fallen quiet. Color Works was brought in to transform this overlooked space into a flexible, student-focused lounge where connection, collaboration, and belonging could thrive once again.

Located in Seminole, Oklahoma, Seminole State College serves a close-knit student body where relationships and community are central to the educational experience. After COVID, the college identified a need for inviting, multifunctional gathering areas that could support both academic collaboration and casual social interaction. The large, outdated room offered potential in its scale but lacked the warmth and identity that today’s students seek.

Client Goals & Challenges

The college’s goal was to create a destination where students, faculty, and visitors could naturally gather—somewhere approachable, comfortable, and reflective of the school’s spirit. The challenge lay in balancing transformation with authenticity: the space needed to feel fresh and relevant while still resonating with the college’s character and sense of place.

Design Strategy / Intervention / Solution

Color Works developed a comprehensive interior design and FF&E package, enhanced with custom artwork, to transform the forgotten room into a lively student hub.

School Spirit with Restraint: Seminole State’s signature green was introduced through accent stools, creating subtle pops of energy without overpowering the palette.
Grounded Materials: A brick façade and leather booth seating added warmth, depth, and a sense of permanence.
Crafted Details: Lighting with leather strap accents provided texture and continuity, tying the materials together.
Biophilic Connection: Custom artwork brought nature-inspired color and calm into the space—most notably through a large, vivid image above the central sofa that evokes the serenity of the outdoors.
Flexible Functionality: Varied seating options and durable finishes support everything from group projects to solo study and lunch breaks, ensuring the space remains adaptable to campus life.

The result is a student union that feels both new and familiar—a space that invites people to gather, linger, and connect.
