The new three-story wing at St. Anthony Hospital in Shawnee, Oklahoma, presented a rare opportunity to design not just a space, but an experience—a visual and emotional bridge between the outside world and the healing environment within. Color Works was engaged to create a lobby and common space that would feel open, restorative, and deeply connected to the hospital’s mission of compassionate care.

As a growing regional healthcare hub, Shawnee needed a modern facility that could serve both local residents and patients traveling from surrounding rural communities. The hospital’s expansion was more than a construction project—it represented a renewed investment in community wellness and an evolution of the patient experience.

Leadership wanted the new lobby to act as a “first impression of healing,” easing the natural anxiety of hospital visits through thoughtful design. They also wished to honor the nonprofit organization whose financial gift, derived from the hospital’s sale, made the new wing possible. The design needed to balance beauty and functionality, creating a space that was both welcoming for visitors and efficient for staff.

Color Works’ design approach focused on creating a smooth sensory transition from the outdoors into a calm, nurturing interior. The lobby became a statement of hospitality and grace—anchored by a custom water feature that adds motion, sound, and serenity to the space. Its soft LED lighting subtly shifts in color throughout the day, capturing attention and soothing nerves for patients of all ages.

Natural materials and layered textures bring warmth to the environment. Wood tones, stone finishes, and polished counters provide tactile comfort while supporting the sense of cleanliness essential in healthcare spaces. These elements were carefully balanced to evoke both professionalism and calm.

Wayfinding and branding were integrated seamlessly throughout the lobby and common areas. Custom signage ensures clear navigation while reflecting St. Anthony’s brand identity, reinforcing familiarity and trust. A central art wall, featuring rotating work by local artists, extends the healing experience through the corridors—reminding patients and visitors that creativity and care are deeply intertwined.

The finished lobby now stands as the heart of St. Anthony Hospital, redefining how visitors experience the facility:
